Blizzard Entertainment’s real-time strategy series Warcraft was released in 1994 for the MS-DOS and Macintosh platforms. Warcraft has a unique game play and story line for its time.

The game play of each game in the Warcraft series was essentially the same as other real-time strategy games of that era. In this game your main objective is to command virtual armies in battle against each other or a computer-controlled enemy. This game mostly takes place on the planet of Azeroth, but also includes the planet Draenor, which is the original homeland of the Orcs and Ogres.

The videogame series Warcraft, by Blizzard Entertainment, has contributed many things to the genre of Real Time Strategy through new obstacles, hardware, and content, exemplifying the major breakthroughs that changed the genre of Real Time Strategy.

The vast and complex world that blizzard created for the real time strategy game series of Warcraft is the primary reason why the trilogy of games will be remembered and remain influential. Azeroth started out as a Tolkien-like fantasy world. Throughout 3 games, 3 game manuals, and several books it has grown into a its own universe.

In the beginning it was a simple story of humans verses orcs. Warcraft Orcs VS Humans was based on Westwood's Dune II  (For the PC, 1992) and Technosoft's Herzog Zwei's (For the Genesis, 1989) style of play (Bruce Geryk, History of Real Time Strategy games). The style of real time strategy games are quite simply. You use underling to collect supplies to build a barracks to train soldiers to fight against the other players.  Unlike Dune II, which was set in a science fiction setting. Warcraft was set in a fantasy world of orcs, dwarves, elves, and demons.

The developmental history of Warcraft from series I, II , and III has had many positive changes to every game. Although they are all based around the same concept, all of the games differ with the release of a new game. The positive changes for each game has made a huge impact on the whole Warcraft franchise and to the games that have came after it as well. The development from Warcraft I to Warcraft III shows a huge difference from what it was to what it has become.

Warcraft is a series of RTS (real-time strategy) computer games that was released in 1995 by Blizzard Entertainment with the first version being Warcraft: Orcs and Humans, second being Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness with an expansion pack consisting of Warcraft II: Beyond The Dark Portal, and Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos with the expansion pack Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne. In two out of the three games you are given the choice to be either the humans or the monster orcs. The objective of the game is to maintain a steady economy while building up an army and weapons to wipe out the opponent. The Warcraft franchise has sold millions of copies and continues to produce new games such as the World Of Warcraft franchise which has became popular all over the world. Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos won the “game of the year award” from more than six different publications.
