There are some things in life that come about and, once we discover them, we ask ourselves, “ How did we ever live without them?” In the world of video games, there is no question that Sensible Soccer definitely fits into that category. From its original release in the 1990’s, Sensible Soccer’s popularity has grown due to its unique features and themes. It is these distinct features such as, the concept of a bird’s eye aerial camera and the ability to play multiple seasons in the game’s popular “ career mode,” that make Sensible Soccer not just an innovator, but a game that has proven to withstand the test of time.

Sensible World of Soccer is a fascinating sports game that is truly worthy of being added to the cannon list. But why, why does anyone care about some old sports game anyway and why is it posted on the list of the top ten video game lists? This essay will attempt to answer some of these questions and explain why this is cannon worthy rather than perhaps other sports games such as Madden.

Sensible World of Soccer, first released in 1992 by Sensible Software and later extended into a series of games, is one of the ten games chosen by a panel at a Game Developers’ Conference to constitute a video game canon. It is the only sports game on the list, suggesting that it was deemed both highly representative of the genre and an excellent game in itself. While not the first video game to represent or simulate sports, and not even the first to focus on soccer, Sensible World of Soccer (SWOS) is noteworthy for the many distinctive elements that have made it an entertaining and addictive classic.
