We live in an age of technology and social networking. As such, we are constantly bombarded with opinionated statements which are very rarely thought-out or qualified. It's easy enough for us to simply state that a particular video game is great. But pointing out why it is great, why it deserves to be remembered, and how it helped change or form the video game culture is a very different task. Doom is one of those video games. Most people have at least heard of, if not played, Doom. But why is it considered great? Why did GameSpy.com place Doom number one on their list of top 50 games of all time and the Doom series number one on their top 10 game series list?1 Even the developers of Doom, id Software, publicly stated that Doom was "the number one cause of decreased productivity in businesses around the world".2 But why? While there are certainly many factors to it's renowned success, the incredible (for the time) game engine which Doom ran on, and the way it achieved a nearly flawless 3D look, are some of the biggest contributing factors to it's enourmous worldwide success. Historically, Doom influenced games and the way they were played for years to come.

Imagine yourself, sent to mars, spending days doing nothing but paperwork when you are a highly trained marine. A call comes in from a nearby planet, they are under attack and need help. You and a handful of other marines are sent out to solve the problem. Upon your arrival you find that there is not life detected. After everyone is sent out and killed, you find that you’re the only one left. Your mission… kill the enemy, destroy the source, and get out alive. Interesting, well, id Software thought so. In 1993 the classic DOOM was released for MS-DOS and Sun workstations ( Wikipedia). It was a break though for id Software. Their last game, Wolfenstein 3-D, did not have the desired qualities and popularity, but with the release of DOOM, the popularity for first-person-shooters exploded. Although not the first of its genre, DOOM raised the bar for future first person shooters through the use of innovative graphics, intriguing game play, and an unforgettable story line.
DOOM was a ground breaking game with new and state-or-the-art technologies, game play, and graphics.

Doom from the start
Games such as halo, call of duty, and ghost recon are all great games as the gaming community would say. However, these games have come a long way from some of the original first person shooter games such as Doom. Gamers must know the history behind Doom and the reason for the creation of it because it is innovative in a way that it is different from other video games by drawing gamers into the “Doom World”. Although many people have played this game, they are unaware of the development history such as: who the creators are and how it was different than current FPS games, if the game was accepted in the gaming community, and how many sequels are available and if their concepts are different.
Doom started in September of 1992 one year after Id software was founded. Doom was created by John Carmack, John Romero, Tom Hall, and Adrian Carmack. These four men created a game that would set the standard for all future first person shooter games.
