After tones of fake posting and flocks Golden Sun is officially coming back to the Nintendo and making its long awaited debut on the DS. As a huge fan of the Golden Sun series you could say that I am overly excited for the release and that the series will be continued on the Nintendo DS system. This is a sign of relief and thanks for E3 for getting the scope on this great role-playing game.

Golden Sun DS from its E3 demo looked incredible. The game opens cinematically, sweeping a mountaintop home into view in glorious 3D against a backdrop of distant peaks. You see Isaac, who is the hero in the original Golden Sun game, has been re-imaged in 3D as well. You take control of him and run across a bridge, taking it all in. Then the demo is over.

Even thought the demo last less than 10 seconds does not defeat the presentation, as a video of battle sequences, exploration and character glimpses follow after you lose control of Isaac’s movements. When you check out the trailer from the E3 conference one can see that Golden Sun DS could be setting the new high bar for 3D role-playing on Nintendo’s handheld. Looking at the trailer you can still enjoy this game knowing that the graphics have been redone dispite the old versions still being playable and enjoyable as well.

The walking controls are just fine.

When I first signed up for the Freshmen Seminar: A Videogame Canon, I thought that my prior knowledge in gaming made me an expert. Yet I was sadly mistaken. I had researched games when it came to if I wanted to buy them but I had never looked into the history of a videogame. The “cannon” list showed a bunch of games that for one I had never heard of or even thought had existed. Prior to being in this class, my knowledge of gaming history went back to Pokémon and Tetris. But I soon learned that the history of gaming expanded from one of the oldest games Pong and Tennis for Two.

My understanding of video games was much appreciated with the help of learning the history and development to the games we have now. With everything that I learned I can say that when I played a game for this class that I utilized what we learned while playing them. Every game that I play is hard to just play for the fun of it because now when I play I am analyzing and interpreting the game as text.

This class was an enjoyable experience into the working of what constitutes as a videogame. The way this class has the way I view games has made me less interested in playing games for fun. In my past games used to be for amusement and just for the fun of it, but lately every time I play a game it gets boring and I keep over analyzing.

When one talks about video games they most likely tend to criticize that they allegedly increase violent tendencies among the youth.  Yet major studies have shown no link between video game usage and violent activity. One study found that an increase in reports of bullying, noting, “Our research found that certain patterns of video game play were much more likely to be associated with these types of behavioral problems than with major violent crime such as school shootings.” The first widely accepted controversial video game was 1976 Death Race, which players controlled cars that ran over pixilated “gremlins”. This game caused such outcry that it was pulled from store shelves and profiled on 60 Minutes. In the early 1980s Long Island PTA president Ronnie Lamm push for legislation on placing restrictions on how close video game arcades could be in schools, staying that they caused children to fight. As violence allegedly became more realistic with time, and politicians conducted hearings during the 1990s regarding what referred to as “violent video games” which included games like Mortal Kombat. This game generated controversy among parents and public officials. Hearings on video game violence and corruption of society were held in late 1992 and 1993.

In response to HomoLudens blog entry I would say that walkthroughs are helpful but sometimes they are just pointless. Walk throughs are very easy to find for just about every game but that can take too long for one to actually sit down and actually read the walkthrough wihle trying to play it at the same time. You could make time out of your busy schedule to complete the game by using the walkthrough. Most people set aside a couple days or so to defeat a game with a walkthrough but others may use the walkthrough just to get passed areas that they get stuck at and then move on with out it.

I have only attempted to use a walkthrough for one game, Black Sigil: Blade of the Exiled. When I found the walkthrough on gamespot..com I was think maybe I should us it since I was stuck. As I began reading it at the part I was essenial stuck at I decided to play the game while reading. After about trying to figure out what I was supposed to do I gave up and have not tried playing the game since. For me the walkthrough was not helpful at all because it did not solve my problem and plus I had no time to restart from the begining.

Would I us a walkthrough again? Maybe depending on what game it was and I actually had the time to read it fully and play the game at the same time. But I would also wanna try to figure the game out on my own regardless if I got stuck or not.

Pokemon is one of the first games I really got into and loved for a couple of years. This game has been made into many different versions that have sold millions of copies and made many new fans for years to come. I wanna do this game for the exhibit because I have had a lot of experience playing this game and can contribute my feedback within the group if I get chossen as part of this exhibit. If I were to be picked for this exhibit my essay topic would talk about how the game has influenced other games or how its game play has changed over the years.Having found out many different ways you can beat this game, I see why this game should be on the cannon list and this is why I feel I should be apart of the Pokemon Red and Blue exhibit since I can prove its ability to be cannonized.

So for this assignment I looked over my past blogging. The first thing I noticed right off the back is that I really do not like doing blogs because I have a hard time figuring out what I want to say and also going to and doing class homework makes my schedule very complicated. But most of the time I forget we have to do blogs for this class. When I look at my blog I saw that I do not make my points flow together in a consistent way. To better this I am going to get my thoughts about my topic written down first before I put it together so it will at least make sense and not be all over the place. After reading your comment about my blog I get what you mean by getting more of a thought or analysis then the information I put into my blog. I also need to focus on just one topic instead of trying to do more than one because my mind will tell me one thing and as I am writing or typing my thought down I think of something else that could possibly work too. In future blogging I will gather my information and collect my thoughts about it, then write them down and read it a couple times to make sure it flows into one and not two or more different ideas. And after reading other peoples blogs and listening to the class discussion I have a clear idea of some things that I will write about pretty soon.

After reading this blog i wanted to answer the question of are there better games or other alternatives that people can do to get relaxed?

I feel that music is a great alternative than games when you wanna get relaxed. Why music instead of video games? Because when ever im feeling down, sad or upset about anything I can always listen to music to get over what ever my feelings were at that time.

I could also play casual games. Casual games are so easy and quick to beat and your stress level will reduce quick since your not thinking too much. But if I were to be playing a video game I may be tempted to be overly stressed then I alreay was. Because I would probably get too work up due to the intense game play that so many games for xbox, playstation, and nintendo have nowadays.....!!!!
